My Dream Come True and an Announcement!

So when I started this blog almost a year ago, I never realized all that would come of it: the blogging friends, the opportunities, the encouragement. It has been pretty awesome. (just an FYI- this is kind of a long post)

First though, I should rewind even more to when I decided to leave teaching to open my business. It was a huge leap. Huge. My husband and I were taking a pretty big risk, knowing that 1 in 3 businesses close after a couple of years, knowing we would be a one income household (those of you that think just because someone is a business owner they are mega rich couldn't be more wrong....I have bills and bills and not one paycheck with my name on it to prove it), knowing it would change a lot in our lives.

But with all of that risk has come a lot of opportunity that I can honestly say I would not have had while teaching.

When I first opened the custard shop I was approached by Susquehanna Style, a regional, upscale lifestyle magazine, to advertise with them. Of course! From that a great relationship developed with the editor (who is the chicest fashionista around, AND whose daughter was born one day before Charlotte!).

Fast forward almost a year and a half, I get an email asking if I would be a model (and I use that term very, very loosely) for their nautical fashion spread for their May issue. Ummmmm....yes! Getting my hair and makeup done AND wearing cute clothes? Sign me up! I was beside myself with excitement! Waiting from February to May was quite long...I couldn't wait to see the end result! I had never been in a magazine before so it was kind of a big deal to me!! In the midst of all of this it was mentioned that they might  be looking for a new blogger....you bet my ears perked up! I will get back to that later though....

So, without further adieu, here is the nautical spread photographed by the talented Donovan of Jeremy Hess Photographers for Susquehanna Style magazine. We were also fortunate enough to be styled by Hilary of Arthur and Daughters. She has impeccable taste. Seriously though, the staff of this magazine is just unmatched. Their talent, professionalism, creativity and kindness is unreal. Such wonderful people to work with.  For all of the details on what I am wearing, check that out here.

This was the cover photo of the magazine...how awesome is that!! Aaaahhhh!!

On top of this awesome fashion shoot, my absolute blogging dream came true! They asked me if I would like to be a monthly contributor for them! Once a month I will submit one of my blog posts for their online edition of Susquehanna Style. I really have not felt that accomplished (in a business aspect) in quite some time. Yes, opening a business is an accomplishment, and having children of course, but this is mine. This blog, this accomplishment is all mine. I couldn't be more proud.

My first blogging post went live on Friday, but I will be posting it on here tomorrow, so stay tuned for a great post on all things bathing suits! I'll be chatting away about gorgeous, stylish, and sexy one-piece bathing suits! I am SO thrilled, SO honored and extremely excited for this opportunity. It is a dream come true!!Thank you, Susquehanna Style!! Nothing like living the blogging dream!

Ok, now on to another AWESOME announcement!

I am going to be collaborating with some pretty awesome ladies! Next week, May 7th I will be co-hosting a monthly series called "What She Wears!" DawnelleCourtneyKayleigh and Meagan and I will pick a theme each month and share with you how we each style a look using that particular theme!

What's awesome is that we are making it a link up so you all can join in on the fun!  We will let you know ahead of time what the theme is going to be so you can get to styling and join in on the fun. But wait...it gets even better! Each week, the five of us are going to pick our favorite and showcase that winner on each of our blogs! Hellloooooo free advertising!

Our first theme is going to be date night. So head to your closet, style it up! See you back here next Tuesday for our very first What She Wears link up!

Ok...now that I have written a novel and shared all that I am so excited, proud and over the moon about- go and have yourself a wonderful day!

Weekend Recap and the Week Ahead

Hey everyone! Hope you all had a great weekend! We had a great one....loved every minute of it!

1. We gave Charlotte her first taste of custard and she loved it!
2. She also had Mac and Cheese for the first time and inhaled it. I couldn't feed it to her fast enough. It was an awesome feeling because Ella (her big sis) doesn't eat anything other than yogurt!
3. Enjoying the sun...looking cute, obvi!
4. Thought she was big enough for the cart at Target, but she looked so tiny!

Ella had her spring choral concert at her preschool. She actually sang this year! Last year she just stood up there with her tongue hanging out while she played with her dress. We were so proud of her! Can't believe we register her for kindergarten on Friday...boooooo!!

Ok now on to this coming week. I have some pretty exciting things to talk about!

~One piece swimsuits. I know. Hearing that makes me cringe too because I am SO not ready to be in a bathing suit, let along be thinking about one. But, rest assured, I found some great selections that I am thrilled to share with you all!

~I'll be sharing a new opportunity that I have embarked on...super exciting!

~With people having vacay's coming up I will be chatting about airport/airplane/travel fashion. You can travel in style and still be comfy!

~And don't forget about this week's edition of Hollywood to Housewife!

On that note...have a great week everyone. I will see you back here tomorrow to talk swimsuits!

Makeup 101: Foundation

I have always loved makeup...absolutely loved it. But one thing that always confused me was the difference between all of the different types of foundation. Do I get cream to powder, stick or liquid foundation? What's best for me?

After a little shopping trip with my bf Betsy a couple of months ago (she is a genius) and some research to educate myself a little bit more, I figured I would break it down for you as basic as possible!

The good thing about foundation is that it is totally optional. Since it can take some time to apply, some mornings you may just want to dab a little here and there for minimal coverage.

Tinted Moisturizers:
What it does: This has very minimal coverage. It won't cover blemishes, spots or dark circles. It basically just evens out your skin tone and (obviously) moisturizes your skin. BB creams are pretty comparable to tinted moisturizers.

Best for: Women who have a pretty clear complexion and typically do not like to wear a lot of makeup. (It's also good for really hot, humid days).
NARS - Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30    Sonia Kashuk® Radiant Tinted Moisturizer With SPF 15
                                     Purchase Here                                                     Purchase Here

Liquid Foundation:

What it does: It gives a little more substantial coverage, evening your tone and the pigment of your skin. Hides blemishes.

Best for: women who have normal or combination skin (like myself). If you tend to have oily skin you can most likely find oil-free liquid foundations.

LancĂ´me - Teint Idole Ultra 24H             liquid foundation
                                               Purchase Here                                               Purchase Here

Cream Foundations:

What it does: It moisturizes and covers. Typically comes in a compact form. Provides medium to heavy coverage.

Best for: women with dry skin that tends to be flaky. The "cream" aspect of the foundation won't dry out your skin even more.

                    CG Smoothers AquaSmooth Compact Foundation
                                    Purchase Here                                                          Purchase Here

Cream to Powder Foundation:

What it does: It's lighter than the cream, has about the same coverage, but has more of a matte finish.

Best for: women who have normal skin. It can really bring out dryness and blemishes, so those who are prone to one or both of those should steer clear of the cream to powder.

Urban Decay - Surreal Skin Cream-to-Powder Foundation
                                       Purchase Here                                                    Purchase Here

Ok so I know there isn't too much detail with each, but if you are anything like me, sometimes the more details, the more overwhelming it is. These are just the basics. Like, the basics of all basics. Some tips when choosing what is best for you as well as applying:

~Pick a few colors that you think are close to your skin (if you are in a drugstore). If you are at a place like Ulta or Sephora they will color match foundation for you- just ask!

~Test the colors along your jawline. While testing, try and find the most natural light (for example near a window).

~When applying your foundation with your bare hands, make sure they are clean before you start! (and for Pete's sake, please make sure you blend into your neck!)

~Start out with a very light layer. Its easier to add more foundation for more coverage than it is to take away!

~Don't be afraid to ask for help. For the longest time I was clueless and therefore wasn't buying the right stuff. Finally I asked, and I now have a new friend at Ulta. She gave me her card and is my go-to girl! (Don't get me wrong, I still am obsessed with my Bare Minerals routine, but a change is good every now and then).

Currently, I am using Lancome's Teint Idole Ultra and am loving it. For my concealer I am using Bare Minerals Correcting Concealer. I love this combination and find its really working for me! It is a little different than what I am used to considering I have been using Bare Minerals for years (literally...since like 2005). And I do still use it from time to time just to switch it up or give my face a little breather.

So there you have it. Hopefully you have a little bit more of an idea as to what the difference is between all of the foundations, and some of your questions are answered. If not, find the nearest employee at your makeup store or makeup counter and ask away!

How to Style: Hollywood to Housewife

Welcome to my second week of Hollywood to Housewife, where I find a picture of a celebrity in an outfit I love (the "Hollywood"), and make it my own using pieces in my closet (the "Housewife"), and without making any new purchases.

This week I didn't have to look too hard. As I was reading through my latest edition of US Weekly I found this picture of Julianne Hough and instantly fell in love. We all know I love a good blazer so of course that caught my attention. I loved the white, because I think its perfect for this time of year. Great for chilly days, but with the bright white, its perfect for spring.

Outfit Details:
Blazer: Target (similar)
Shirt: Old Navy
Jeans: Old Navy
Shoes: Target
Necklace: Stella and Dot

A few things I have discovered from doing this....its a lot easier than you think to create celebrity looks! Really...it is. Second...I need a tan. Like, yesterday. And lastly....pretty sure Julianne Hough's waist is as big as one of my thighs. Goodness gracious that girl is skinny!

Have a great day, all! Talk to you tomorrow for a heart to heart on foundation!

My Business Casual Getup

When I use the term business casual, I use it very loosely. My business casual is super casual. I know it can be interpreted so many different ways. Does it include jeans? Does it not? For guys is it just a tie with no suit jacket, or just a polo shirt and no tie? Is it business casual every day or just Fridays?

I know...who knew there was so much to think about.  Crazy. For me, since I run my own business and am my own boss, I can interpret "business casual" however I like. Although some days when I am scooping the custard and waiting on customers I am wearing jeans and my Chuck Taylors, I do have meetings and whatnot that I have to actually look presentable for.

In my mind, because I consider my line of business to be pretty laid back and (for lack of a better word), casual, I don't go overboard for my meetings. Plus, they are typically with other local business owners that I may be collaborating with, or people that I do my advertising and marketing with. To me, its not as though I am a financial advisor or something of the sorts that I think require a suit and tie.

Now that you have heard my thoughts on business casual (which I am sure makes you feel so much better), here is what I would typically wear to a quick meeting...

This dress can be worn a few different ways, but for this day in particular I thought the wedges dressed it up a bit. The dress is light enough so you can even throw a blazer on over it to make it look a little bit more professional if you like (along with a cute pair of pumps too).

Overall, this dress was definitely comfortable. I maybe could have gone a size smaller, but with the way I am built now, I am not super duper comfortable with wearing a dress (a short dress, really) that is tight. This provided just enough room for comfort!

Outfit Details:
Dress: Old Navy
Shoes: Charlotte Russe (similar)
Bracelets: Stella and Dot

Another business casual option if you aren't into how I am wearing it is this (similar to the alternative I described above).....

         Business Casual

So there you have it, ladies! Business casual! Interpret as you wish, but just be sure if you do work in an office there aren't any specific rules on what can and cannot be worn! I wouldn't want to get you in trouble!

Weekend and the Week Ahead

Happy Monday, everyone! Hopefully you all had a great weekend!

I enjoyed time with my parents, worked my tail off and relaxed a bit. Perfect combo for a weekend!  Here are a few snaps from the weekend!

Ryan walked through the door Friday afternoon with Charlotte in one hand and this in the other. Amen. If you haven't tried it, you must!

Charlotte was 7 months on Friday. She is SO nosy and into everything...the complete opposite of her sister! Needless to say, we had fun attempting to get her monthly pics.

Church on Sunday called for comfort. Period.

Finally got our porch swing up and running....so relaxing to just sit and swing (with an Angry Orchard in hand, obvi)

And this little one...out of all the new toys she has gotten for her birthday, she decides to play with rocks and make up a game with them (in which she changes the rules as she goes. Isn't that how all games go?)

This week there are some fun things planned for the blog!!

I'll be chatting about:

~business casual looks (for all you ladies who sort of have to dress up for work, but sort of don't-like me), ~my next edition of Hollywood to Housewife
~some makeup
~maybe a little talk of nails and manicures thrown in for good measure!!

Have a great Monday! Linking up today with Sami (who has the most gorgeous hair) for Weekend Shenanigans!

How To Wear White Jeans

If you are anything like me you are itching to wear white jeans! To me, that is a sure sign that the weather is getting warmer and spring is here! (Contrary to popular belief, you don't need to wait until Memorial Day to wear white)

Nothing irritates me more than people who "rush the season." Meaning, the first day of relatively warm temps, there are girls in camel toe shorts and sandals and guys in tanks and flip flops. People- its not that warm yet. No need to break out the strapless dresses just yet. How about a slow transition? I'm all about a slow transition.

That'y why I love white jeans (or any colored jeans for that matter). They are a great transition from cooler to warmer temps.

Check out some different ways to style your white jeans. All pretty casual. Great to wear from day to night. You can find all of the details on each of these looks here.

How to Style: Hollywood to Housewife

Happy Thursday everyone! And welcome....welcome to my first edition of what I like to call Hollywood to Housewife. What is it you ask? I find a picture of an outfit adorned by a celebrity (Hollywood, if you will) and I recreate it and make it my own (the "Housewife," that's me!).

What I like about this weekly project that I am creating for myself is the shopping of my closet that it requires. I force myself to choose something that has pieces I already own. As tempting as it is to pick a look that would require me to go shopping, I know I have a closet full of pieces waiting to be worn.

There is also that gratification that I am wearing a look so similar to a celebrity for a fraction of the cost. In fact, my whole outfit probably cost the same amount as Kim K's manicure in this picture. Boom.

I loved this look. Loved it. What appealed to me was how effortless it looked. Plus, with it being in the low 60's today in PA, it was the perfect outfit for the temps.

Outfit Details:
 Shirt: Old Navy
Blazer: Target (similar)
Jeans: Target (old)
Scarf: Gap (old)
Sandals: Charlotte Russe (similar)
Purse: gifted

Have a great day and see you next Thursday for my next Hollywood to Housewife!

Life With a Side of Mayo

Weird title, I know. Yesterday I had a couple of meetings, and I was lucky enough that my husband was in the area for work (he usually works at least 45 mins or more from home). Because of  that we were able to meet up for lunch, which is a real treat! A meal with each other with no children? Eating the meal the whole way through while its still warm? Adult conversation? Yes, please!

Anyway, I apparently decided I wanted to save some mayo on my face for later in the day, in case I got hungry (and apparently brownie on my chest...I never said I was a neat and clean eater). You never know when you are going to need a little mayo, right? In the midst of him laughing at me, he said my blog title should be Life With a Side of Mayo. True story. I mean, mayo is pretty delicious. Especially if you dip your french fries in it. (I have my college friend Jess to thank for that...as if I needed one more thing to make me disgustingly fat my freshman year of college. Thanks, girl)

Outfit Details:
Shirt: Target
Jeans: Gap
Sandals: Old Navy
Necklace: gifted
Clutch: Blair Ritchey
Bracelets: Stella and Dot

On that note....I need a tan! Holy cow!!
