Embracing the 'Whatever'

If you follow me on instagram or facebook, you know that I was away last week with my family and my in-laws in St. Maarten. It was an awesome week. Depsite one day of rain, the weather was great, the company was even better, and quality time was spent.

With the approach of summer, or should I say swimsuit season, comes all sorts of anxieties for women. Do my boobs look weird in the suit, does my butt look big, I have too much cellulite, I shouldn't be seen in public in a bathing suit, and the list goes on and on.

I am guilty of thinking just about every single one of those, without a doubt. I'd like to meet the woman who doesn't have insecurities!

Recently there have been so many articles, news segments, etc. about women embracing themselves in their bathing suits- a sort of call to action to focus on playing with your children, being present, enjoying the moment, and not worrying what you look like in your bathing suit. Easier said than done, right?

Chances are, I am not looking at you thinking "yikes she should not be wearing that." It's more like "I wonder if my cellulite is really noticeable," "I wonder how droopy my boobs look in this suit?" "Wow I could start a fire with how much my thighs are rubbing together!"

Something changed though this past week when I was away- I really made it a point to try and not worry about what I looked like in my bathing suit and just be. It was kind of refreshing to say the least!

So seriously, stop worrying about what you look like in your bathing suit. I'm not looking at you with judging eyes. Be there, be present, enjoy yourself. If I can post pictures of myself in a bathing on the freakin' internet, you can certainly hang out at the pool!

Feeling Nostalgia with Lip Smacker + a Giveaway!

I love the feeling of nostalgia. Anything and everything that can take me back in time or quickly trigger some sort of memory I just love.

You can't ignore a feeling, an emotion, when it's triggered by something. For example (and a kind of funny one too, I guess). My parents had this pitcher when I was growing up, it was like a really ugly baby food carrot orange. They use to buy frozen juice in a can, plop it in the pitcher with some water, and that was our juice. That pitcher encompasses my whole childhood. When I was at my friends house the other week, I opened her fridge, only to find the very pitcher from my childhood. The same baby food carrot color with the accordion style lid. I was immediately taken back to my parents kitchen, sitting at the table with a juice mustache! (She borrowed it from her in laws and continues to use it- and I love it!)

Lip Smacker is something else that brings a feeling of nostalgia. Lucky for me though, it's a feeling that I've been fortunate enough to feel since I was little. More importantly though, I get to share it with my daughters! It's definitely something that I can purchase "one for you, one for me!"

And if I am being truly honest, Lip Smacker is something that I have never really stopped using! Even as an adult, it's pretty much a staple. A lip balm here, a lip gloss there. I feel like it kind of grows with you, too- am I right? I have the same feeling of nostalgia, every time I break out my Dr. Pepper. It's a brand that is loved by children and adults alike!

As a kid, I remember saving my peppermint for the holidays, big Lip Smackers were a treat, and french vanilla was pretty much a given in all of my friends' purse or backpack. Now I find myself gravitating towards the Layer-It BlueberryBanana Parfait.  Besides it tasting delicious, it gives just enough glimmer to my lips to keep me looking somewhat pulled together. It also helps that I don't need a mirror to apply, which means I reapply it more throughout the day! For just an every day basic, their lip balm is a must!

I mentioned before I get to share my nostalgia with Ella. She likes to keep some in her backpack too for the school day-she is partial to the Disney Princess flavors (they even have new flavors out now for the movie Inside Out!). We are working on applying it correctly with Charlotte- she is still learning, and thinks its ok to put it all over her face and bite into it-haha! She'll learn eventually! But she loves it just as much as Ella. Nothing beats the feeling of being able to share a favorite from my childhood with my daughters.

Lip Smacker is generous enough to bring the nostalgia to one lucky winner with an awesome giveaway! I don't know about you, but I'm a sucker for the donut flavors, but mostly the Dr. Pepper!! (totally random, but fun fact-one of my best college friends has well over 100 Dr. Pepper lip balms. Our friends all pitched in and stocked her with them for life-that's how much she loves Dr. Pepper Lip Smacker!)

Greetings from St. Maarten!

I know, I know, I have been kind of silent on the blog this week, but if you follow me on instagram or on facebook, you know it's for a good reason.

I am calling St. Maarten home for the week with my family and my in laws. I am one lucky gal to be able to travel to such awesome places, AND to have the support system at home to be able to keep my store up and running for the week (thank you Kacey and Morgan).

Here's a few snapshots from the week so far...

Follow along on instagram or facebook for the rest of my week's adventures, until it's back to reality on Saturday!

Also, check back tomorrow-I have a super fun giveaway planned with Lip Smacker!!

Swimming in Style with Target

As I get ready to head to St. Maarten for the week ahead, I can't help but have swimsuits on my mind. While they aren't my most favorite to try on, it is necessary.

I remember one time when I was in college I was trying on bikinis and I didn't want to come out of the fitting room to show Ryan (what I wouldn't give to have that body back!). The saleslady said "if you can't come out in the fitting room how are you going to be able to wear it in public?" Touche. So ever since then I just put on a brave face when I try swimwear on.

When I can, I order online. I pretty much know my one-piece size so the risk isn't terrible. I also just make sure of the return policy before I buy. More often than not though, I luck out, and I don't even need to leave my house!

I also love how one piece bathing suits aren't like what our Moms used to wear. Each summer the styles and options have only been getting better and better! I remember when I was younger (and able to wear a bikini) that I thought it must be terrible to have to wear a one piece, mainly because the styles and selection were terrible. Not the case anymore!

While I don't mind spending a little more on a one piece (because I like a good quality swimsuit), I do still love a good bargain! Target's online selection has been really great-in store is a hit or miss, so I tend to browse their online selection more than when I am in the store for groceries (because you can obviously find bread in the women's section).

Here are a few of my faves (and for a sizing reference, I am typically a large in women's and an XL in juniors):

Welcome to the Jungle

I've loved the whole palm prints trend for a while, but haven't really found anything that I have loved enough to purchase, or just haven't had luck finding anything that's looked good on me. I love this romper and these shorts, but neither screamed 'buy me!' when I tried them on.

When I was doing a little shopping for my store last weekend I stumbled on this top and thought now is as good of a time as any to give it a try! I could always send it back if it didn't look right or the quality wasn't that great. Luckily, I fell in love with it when I tried it on! It's a little shorter than I would usually wear, but fashion is all about taking risks sometimes, right? (small, reasonable risks if you are me!).

Keeping it simple with my distressed shorts and white sandals was really the only way I wanted to wear it. I could easily dress this top up with a cute high waist skirt, but it just screams casual to me!

And just because....Charlotte now insists at every shoot that she be in some pictures. How can you say no?

Casual Crochet

Sometimes it just feels good to wear something that is not super fitted or tight, and just allows some room to breathe. Translation: something I don't have to worry about sucking it in for. I realize the cut of this dress isn't the most flattering, and doesn't show your shape too much, but that's ok! That's the look, the feel, the boho-ness (I know that's not a word, but whatever) of this dress, and I love it! You don't always have to wear something that shows your shape-it's all in how to style it, how you wear it, and your confidence!

I can't tell you the last time I wore something off the shoulder like this. I wasn't too sure about it, and kept having my husband adjust and readjust the straps of the dress for me until I was super comfortable. I figured why not give it a try, and I am glad I did! It was kind of refreshing to try something that I normally wouldn't. Plus, being that it's from my store, I really wanted to try it so I could give my honest opinion to customers!

High Waisted Shorts-Two Ways

A few weeks ago I styled these shorts two different ways, taking them from day to night. New shorts, new style!

I had been looking for a cute pair of high waisted shorts that weren't super short. Yet again, Old Navy to the rescue. I actually purchased them in black and olive. They are comfortable, the length is ideal for someone my age and they fit well too!

I knew something like these shorts would be easy to take from day to night. Sometimes it's as simple as changing the accessories or even just the shoes. With these though, I wanted to change pretty much everything but the shorts!

I chose to keep it casual for work with a knotted chambray and sneakers, but wanted to dress it up as much as I could with strappy heels and a crisp white blazer.

For an easy date night look, I just decided to keep my jewelry the same, but change the chambray to a simple fitted tank top that I could tuck in to show off the high waisted shorts. Adding a white blazer might have been a bit much in the heat, but I love the idea of a bright white in the summer time! The heels and clutch were the perfect finishing touch!

When I first think of cropped tops or midriff's I think of young, teenybops prancing around in booty shorts with their flat stomachs exposed. What I don't think of is a thirty something mom of two beboppin' around in one.

But, I tend to think that age doesn't have to put a restriction on certain styles (unless it's booty shorts, then there is most definitely an age limit. Or just no one should wear them). I usually tell my customers it's all in how your style it-whatever 'it' is, that makes it age appropriate.

I saw this cropped sweater when I was at the Loft the other week for my styling event. My friend Lena loved the pants, so I went on the hunt for a top to match. I initially thought a fitted tank would look adorable tucked in (which I still think it would), but then I saw this cropped sweater and loved it even more!

I loved the outfit so much on her that I tried it on and ended up with it too! This whole outfit was a little out of my comfort zone, but it was comfy, and it totally grew on me!

Moral of the story-don't let your age hinder what you might try! You never know what something will look like unless you give it a try!!
